A hand-carved Guatemalan mico (monkey) mask with a deeply gouged black crown, a bold white face, and red-rimmed eyes and nostrils. The back shows the carver’s hand-chiseled tool marks, and a natural fiber hanger is attached for display.
A bit of history: Monkey masks like this appear in the Baile del Venado (Dance of the Deer), a traditional Guatemalan celebration featuring masked animal characters. The mico’s dark head and white muzzle and eye rings are thought to represent the spider monkey, native to the highlands around Lake Atitlán.
Details: Carved and painted wood, natural fiber hanger. Dimensions 9" x 6.5 x 3.5
Condition: Good vintage condition with expected wear, small paint losses, and scuffs consistent with age. Please see photos.
